The Experiment and the Institution: La Chorrera and the Weyburn Trials

In 1952, Osmond and Hoffer began clinical LSD trials at Weyburn Mental Hospital in Saskatchewan, careful, institutional, methodical. In 1971, Terence and Dennis McKenna conducted a self-experiment in the Colombian Amazon, uncontrolled, theoretical, conducted by two people in their early twenties with no clinical oversight. Both produced genuine findings. Neither would have been possible without the other.
