True Hallucinations

6 companion texts

True Hallucinations raises three questions: what happened at La Chorrera, what is Timewave Zero, and what are the DMT entities? The first is answered by comparing Terence's and Dennis's accounts. The second is answered by the mathematics. The third is actively being researched. These readings address each question in turn.
book
The Brotherhood of the Screaming Abyss
Dennis McKenna · 2012
Dennis McKenna's account of La Chorrera, the same events, the other perspective. Reading True Hallucinations and The Brotherhood back to back is the only way to get a full picture of what happened. Terence's version is cosmic; Dennis's is pharmacological and psychological.
book
DMT: The Spirit Molecule
Rick Strassman · 2001
The clinical research that documented entity contact reports under controlled conditions. 60 participants, IV DMT, entity encounters in a substantial share of high-dose sessions. Strassman's science and McKenna's philosophy are in conversation throughout.
book
The Invisible Landscape
Terence & Dennis McKenna · 1975
The academic version of the ideas that became True Hallucinations, the Timewave Zero mathematics and the stoned ape hypothesis in their first published form. Written two years after La Chorrera, in the immediate aftermath. More technical and less literary than the later books.
book
Supernatural
Graham Hancock · 2005
Hancock's extension of McKenna's entity contact argument to prehistoric cave art, the hypothesis that the paintings at Lascaux and Altamira depict what their creators experienced in altered states. The McKenna hypothesis applied to archaeology.
journal article
Survey of Entity Encounter Experiences Occasioned by Inhaled N,N-Dimethyltryptamine
Alan K. Davis and colleagues · 2020
The Johns Hopkins survey of 2,561 DMT users documenting entity contact rate, entity characteristics, and lasting effects. The systematic data that confirms what McKenna reported anecdotally. PLoS ONE.
book
Food of the Gods
Terence McKenna · 1992
True Hallucinations and Food of the Gods are companion texts, the personal account and the theoretical argument for the same underlying ideas. True Hallucinations is where the ideas were formed; Food of the Gods is where they were systematized.
