High-dose psilocybin produces experiences indistinguishable from near-death experiences
Partially Confirmed recorded as “Substantially Overlapping” True Hallucinations
Martial et al. (Consciousness and Cognition, 2019) compared the wording of 625 near-death experience reports with about 15,000 reports of drug experiences involving 165 substances. Reports about ketamine were the most similar to near-death reports, followed by Salvia divinorum and a series of serotonergic psychedelics including DMT. The overlap is real but measured by word similarity in self-reports; the study did not single out psilocybin, and the experiences are not shown to be identical.
