Timewave Zero: The 2012 Prediction
McKenna's Timewave Zero theory predicted that time would reach a point of maximum 'novelty', a singularity, on December 21, 2012, corresponding to the end of the Mayan Long Count calendar. The theory was derived from the I Ching.

December 21, 2012 passed without the predicted singularity or transformational event. McKenna had acknowledged the theory was falsifiable, it was one of his most intellectually honest positions. The Timewave theory has no scientific support. Its value, such as it is, lies in the underlying philosophical claim that time has qualitative structure, a claim that is independent of the specific 2012 prediction and remains interesting as a philosophical hypothesis.
