Television as Dominator Drug: McKenna's Media Theory
Television is 'the dominator drug par excellence', control of content, uniformity of content, and repeatability of content make it a tool of coercion and manipulation. It replaces direct experience with mediated passivity.
confirmed
McKenna wrote this in 1992 before streaming, social media, and algorithmic feeds. The attention economy that has emerged since, with platforms optimized for engagement rather than truth, using variable-ratio reinforcement schedules identical to slot machines, is a much stronger version of the dominator drug he described. Sean Parker (founding president of Facebook) confirmed in 2017 that the platform was deliberately designed to exploit psychological vulnerabilities for engagement. The neuroscience of social media addiction now shows similar reward pathway activation to substance use. McKenna was directionally correct; the technology exceeded his warning.
