Television is a dominator drug that produces passivity and compliance
Partially Confirmed recorded as “More Accurate Now Than When Written” Food of the Gods
McKenna wrote this in 1992 about network TV. Sean Parker (2017): Facebook was 'designed to exploit psychological vulnerabilities.' Haidt (2024): smartphone social media correlates with dramatic increases in adolescent depression/anxiety. The algorithmic feed is a more effective version of what McKenna described, variable-ratio reinforcement, individual optimization, infinite scroll. The mechanism he identified is real; the technology has become much more powerful.
McKenna (1992); Parker interview (2017); Haidt, The Anxious Generation (2024)
