The Botanical Dimensions Archive: Did McKenna's Garden Survive?
McKenna and Kathleen Harrison founded Botanical Dimensions in 1985, an ethnobotanical garden on the Big Island of Hawaii preserving plants used by indigenous cultures for healing and spiritual practice. His vision: a living archive of threatened plant knowledge.
confirmed
Botanical Dimensions is still operating as of 2026, maintained primarily by Kathleen Harrison since Terence's death in 2000. The garden holds collections of hundreds of species of psychoactive, medicinal, and culturally significant plants, many from Schultes's original Amazon documentation, many from Mesoamerican traditions. It produces an educational newsletter (Botanical Dimensions Newsletter) and hosts researchers and students. The garden represents one of the few living implementations of Schultes's urgency: plants documented in the field, preserved in cultivation, with their ethnobotanical context maintained. Its scale is small relative to the scope of the loss Schultes described, but it is a real and functioning example of what Schultes called for.
