Ibogaine is the most promising psychedelic for treating opioid use disorder and PTSD in veterans
Partially Confirmed recorded as “Promising, Evidence Still Early” Food of the Gods
Small studies showing dramatic results: Noller et al. 2018 (n=14 OUD): 69% reduction in withdrawal symptoms. Stanford, Cherian et al. 2024 (Nature Medicine, n=30 veterans with traumatic brain injury, open-label with no control group): large reductions in PTSD, depression and disability ratings at one month. Texas allocated $50M for ibogaine research in 2025, Mississippi enacted an ibogaine research bill (HB 314) in March 2026. BUT: ibogaine has cardiac risks (QTc prolongation) that have caused deaths; no Phase 3 RCT has been completed; no FDA approval pathway established. Evidence is compelling enough to fund large trials; not strong enough to establish clinical efficacy.
Noller et al. (2018); Cherian et al., Nature Medicine (2024); cannabis magazine report (April 2026)
