The Opposite of Addiction: Connection, How Hari's Claim Holds Up
The opposite of addiction is not sobriety but connection. Addiction is primarily driven by social disconnection, trauma, and lack of purpose, not by the pharmacological properties of the drug alone. Hari cites the Rat Park experiment as the animal evidence.
partially-confirmed
The core claim, that environment and social connection modulate addiction, is well-supported. Rat Park itself has not been reliably replicated: Alexander's colony rats drank less morphine than isolated rats (1978 to 1981), but Bozarth and colleagues (1989) and Petrie (1996) did not find the same clear housing effect, and a 2019 commentary by Gage and Sumnall in Addiction argued the popular story has outrun the evidence. However, Hari's formulation overstates the case: opioid withdrawal is a genuine pharmacological process independent of social context, and naloxone-precipitated withdrawal is real. The more accurate claim is that connection modulates addiction risk and severity, not that pharmacology plays no role.
