The opposite of addiction is connection
Partially Confirmed Chasing the Scream
Social environment demonstrably modulates drug-seeking behavior (Rat Park, Vietnam). But Rat Park has not been reliably replicated: later attempts (Bozarth and colleagues, 1989; Petrie, 1996) did not find the same clear effect. Opioid withdrawal is a genuine physiological process. The fentanyl era (about 105,000 US overdose deaths in 2023) shows even connected people die from contaminated supply. The connection model is real but overstated.
Hari (2015); Gage & Sumnall, Addiction (2019); CDC (2023); Bozarth, Murray & Wise (1989); Petrie (1996)
