LSD and Mystical Experience: Hofmann's Claim
LSD produces genuine mystical experiences, states phenomenologically identical to those described in mystical literature across traditions, and these experiences constitute its most important therapeutic and spiritual potential.
partially-confirmed
The Mystical Experience Questionnaire (MEQ30), derived from Stace's philosophy of mysticism, now reliably measures 'complete mystical experiences' in psychedelic trial subjects. Several studies have found that higher MEQ30 scores are associated with better outcomes in depression, alcohol use disorder and end-of-life anxiety; these are correlations within trials. A 2023 randomized trial at the University of Basel (Holze et al., Biological Psychiatry) reported that LSD-assisted therapy reduced anxiety and depression symptoms in people with anxiety disorders. Hofmann's claim that mystical experience is the mechanism of action is testable; current studies show associations, not proof of mechanism.
