A single psilocybin session can produce lasting reduction in tobacco addiction

Partially Confirmed recorded as “Promising Pilot Data Only” LSD: My Problem Child

Johnson et al. (Journal of Psychopharmacology, 2014): in an open-label pilot study of 15 long-term smokers, 12 (80%) were abstinent at 6 months after psilocybin sessions combined with cognitive behavioral therapy. Johnson, Garcia-Romeu and Griffiths (American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, 2017): 10 of 15 (67%) were abstinent at 12 months. The rates are high compared with typical cessation trials, but the study was small and had no control group, so it cannot show that psilocybin caused the result. A randomized trial is under way at Johns Hopkins.
