Hemp's Industrial Potential: The Herer Claim

Hemp could replace wood pulp for paper, petrochemical fibers for textiles, and fossil fuels for energy. Herer estimated that fully restored hemp industries would generate $500 billion to $1 trillion annually and would reduce deforestation, carbon emissions, and petrochemical dependence.
partially-confirmed
The 2018 US Farm Bill legalized industrial hemp cultivation for the first time since 1937. By 2023, the US hemp industry was valued at approximately $4.9 billion (Cannabis market research firm). Hemp building materials (hempcrete), textile fibers, and bioplastics are commercial products. Carbon sequestration studies confirm hemp sequesters CO2 more efficiently per acre than forests. The trillion-dollar estimate was optimistic given agricultural economics and existing competition from established synthetics, but the basic feasibility of all the uses Herer described has been demonstrated.
