The CIA and LSD: What MK-Ultra Actually Produced

Stevens documented the CIA's purchase of the world's LSD supply, Operation Midnight Climax, and the coercive dosing of unwitting subjects. He argued the program produced nothing useful and killed at least one person (Frank Olson).
confirmed
Church Committee hearings (1975), FOIA documents, and Frank Olson's 1994 exhumation confirmed the basic facts Stevens reported. A 2019 John Marks book update and the 2022 documentary 'The CIA's Secret Experiments' added additional documentation. Frank Olson's family reached a legal settlement with the US government in 1976; his son Eric Olson continued to press for murder charges until 2012. The CIA's own declassified inspector general report (1963) confirmed that MK-Ultra 'operated outside normal controls' and produced no verifiable intelligence techniques. The program's failure was documented internally before it was publicly revealed.
