The Agronomic Claim: Hemp vs. Cotton
Herer argued that hemp fiber was superior to cotton in yield, water efficiency, and pesticide requirements, that if hemp were legalized, it would displace cotton as the dominant textile fiber in America.
confirmed
Agronomic comparisons (USDA Agricultural Research Service, 2021): hemp produces comparable fiber yield to cotton per acre with approximately 50% less water and minimal pesticide requirement. Hemp's protein content, omega fatty acid profile, and soil impact are superior to cotton's across multiple metrics. The commercial reality: textile cotton's supply chain is deeply embedded, gin infrastructure, fiber processing, spinning, dyeing, representing a century of investment that hemp fiber cannot quickly displace. An outdoor clothing company and Levi's have introduced hemp-cotton blend fabrics; these represent a small fraction of their production. Hemp fabric as a percentage of US textile consumption is below 1% as of 2026. The agronomic case is confirmed; the commercial transition is far slower than Herer predicted.
