Stanislav Grof's Legacy: Has His Cartography Been Validated?
Grof conducted more LSD sessions than any clinical researcher, approximately 4,000, and developed the most comprehensive map of non-ordinary states, including the perinatal matrices and transpersonal domains. Stevens documented him as the most systematic cartographer of the experiential territory that psychedelics reveal. His perinatal and transpersonal frameworks were too speculative for mainstream psychiatry in 1987.
partially-confirmed
The biographical domain of Grof's cartography, that psychedelics facilitate access to repressed biographical material and resolve COEX (systems of condensed experience), is strongly supported by current clinical research. MDMA-AT for PTSD works specifically through facilitating access to traumatic biographical memory with reduced fear response. The biographi narrative processing hypothesis is central to trauma therapies generally. The perinatal domain, experiences organized around the birth process, has not been validated clinically. The transpersonal domain remains outside mainstream clinical framing but is engaged in academic consciousness studies. Grof's biographical domain has been confirmed; his more ambitious frameworks remain contested.
