Then (1978), The Road to Eleusis
The UNESCO Recognition: Eleusis as a Living Philosophical Site
Wasson, Hofmann, and Ruck argued implicitly that Eleusis was the most philosophically significant site in Western civilization, the place where the tradition that produced Plato, Cicero, and the foundations of Western philosophy underwent its most important religious experience. In 1978, Eleusis was a minor archaeological site overshadowed by Athens.
confirmed
Elefsina (ancient Eleusis) was designated a European Capital of Culture in 2023, one of three cities designated that year (alongside Veszprém, Hungary, and Timișoara, Romania). The designation brought €8 million in EU funding for cultural programming, archaeological development, and international attention. The year's programming explicitly engaged the ancient Mystery tradition. Archaeological excavations began with new EU funding. The site is now UNESCO-monitored. The designation did not produce the chemical residue analysis that would confirm the Road to Eleusis hypothesis, but it produced the institutional attention and funding that makes future analysis more likely. Eleusis has been recognized as the philosophically significant site that Wasson, Hofmann, and Ruck argued it was.
