The Eleusinian Mysteries at Eleusis used a pharmacologically active kykeon, some psychoactive preparation
Partially Confirmed recorded as “Gaining Physical Evidence” The Road to Eleusis
Mas Castellar de Pontós analysis (Egea et al., Antiquity, 2020): ergot alkaloids detected in dental calculus from a woman buried at a Demeter cult site; ergot spores found in sealed ritual vessels. Antonopoulos et al. (Scientific Reports, 2026): lye converts toxic ergot to psychoactive LSA derivatives under ancient conditions. Physical evidence exists at an affiliated site; direct analysis at Eleusis itself has not been conducted. The hypothesis has moved from speculative to evidenced.
