Classical Greek philosophers including Plato underwent the Eleusinian initiation
Partially Confirmed recorded as “Documented for Some; Inferred for Plato” The Road to Eleusis
Multiple ancient sources confirm: Plato describes experiences consistent with initiation language in the Phaedo and Phaedrus; Sophocles, Pindar, Cicero, Plutarch, and Marcus Aurelius are all historically documented as initiates. The initiation was open to all Greek-speakers and was the most common religious experience in the ancient Mediterranean world, millions were initiated over a thousand years. Cicero says in On the Laws that he was initiated, and other named figures are reported as initiates, but Plato's dialogues use initiation imagery without stating that Plato himself was initiated; for Plato it is an inference.
