The ethnobotanical pharmacopoeia represents the most important untapped resource for new drug development
Unresolved recorded as “A Judgment, Not a Testable Finding” Plants of the Gods
Newman & Cragg (Journal of Natural Products, 2020): 50% of drugs approved 1981-2019 were natural product-derived or inspired. Fabricant & Farnsworth (Environmental Health Perspectives, 2001) reported that most plant-derived drugs they reviewed are used in ways related to their traditional uses; a '30x more efficient' figure often attached to them could not be found in the paper (Source not found; under review). Schultes's 91 plants have produced: psilocybin (in Phase 3 trials), ibogaine (early studies), mescaline (decriminalized in Colorado), DMT and ayahuasca (early trials), multiple non-psychedelic therapeutic leads. The pharmacological resource Schultes documented is far from exhausted.
