What is the "reducing valve" model and how does it map to current neuroscience? mechanism | Huxley (1954), following Bergson: the brain normally narrows consciousness to what's relevant for survival, suppressing the rest. Mescaline removes this filter, allowing access to "Mind at Large." Current mapping: the Default Mode Network functions as a predictive filter, suppressing sensory inputs that confirm predictions. Psychedelics reduce DMN connectivity, allowing more raw sensory data through. Not an exact match, Huxley's model is optimistic (what's revealed is beautiful) while the neuroscience is neutral. The garden chair terror in Huxley's own account is the counterevidence his model doesn't fully account for. Huxley (1954); Nichols (2016); Carhart-Harris et al.
